Ebselen is a novel nontoxic selenium-containing multifunctional antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent (1) which isplays protective effects in reperfusion injury and stroke (2). This compound is an excellent scavenger of peroxynitrite (3), acts as a glutathione peroxidase mimetic (4) and is cell permeable.
