Pifithrin μ selectively interacts with HSP70 and disrupts its association with co-chaperones and substrate proteins. It induces apoptosis and it is cell permeable. Also, inhibits p53 binding to mitochondria by reducing its affinity for antiapoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL. Pifithrin μ rescues cells from lethal γ-irradiation-induced cell death.
